Laura den Hertog: Biography

Laura den Hertog - Biography

Laura was born in Montreal, Canada in 1959.

Laura den Hertog entered the fine art scene in 2004 and quickly captured the attention of galleries in the US, Canada and the UK. As a member the International Guild of Realism she is currently included in The New Reality: The Frontier of Realism in the 21st Century, a 3 year long Museum tour in the USA. Her work has graced book and magazine covers and she has appeared in a feature interview on PBS television. She has participated in juried shows all over the USA. Her recent addition of landscape paintings has brought further acclaim and her work can be found in galleries across North America.

Born to Dutch parents and raised in Canada, den Hertog's cultural background is rich in the arts. She credits a lov

for the masters to early exposure to the 17th C. painters in Dutch museums. Trained as a commercial artist at Montreal's Dawson College, the artist spent her early years working in illustration and design. With a strong desire to create art that reflected her own sensibilities, she left behind the commercial world to study traditional, old master painting techniques. The artist currently lives and works in a small town north of Montreal, Canada.

Statement:

My work is always a blend of the past and present. I use classical painting techniques to express the here and now, blending the two paths together into the fabric of a painting.

When working on figure paintings I am always concerned with my model’s inherent body language. Our bodies communicate long before we speak, small clues are found in the hands, a tension in the shoulders, a tilt of the head.

My landscapes reflect the land as a whole. I seek vistas that move me, inviting and peaceful. I like to capture the harmony of land and sky, tree and field and use an almost monochromatic palette to do this.

A Note from the Artist:

So who is Jasper and why is he on this page? Well...he is my constant companion in the studio, he greets visitors (we are working on his manners), alerts me to possible invaders (when he manages to see out a window by standing on his tippy toes) and unfailingly wags his tail in approval of my art. I may have to do a series of paintings about Jasper...maybe itty bitty paintings.
